Who We Are

SyncDev Third Party Open Source Development started off as SSN (Synchronet Support Network) which was an Echomail Network dedicated to the modding and customization of Synchronet to eliminate the "Stock Syndrome" that Synchronet (as well as many other softwares) endure as people set things up, don't do a damn thing to them and let them run on auto-pilot.

SSN was Co-Founded by Time Warrior and Sniper.

From there, SSN took one more step forward on it's evolutionary path and the SyncDev Modding Group was born. Co-Founded by Time Warrior and RuneMaster (The official Co-Author of the Synchronet Web Interface).

Having made the Leap to Linux -- Time Warrior restructured SyncDev into what you see here right now. Not simply limited to Synchronet support -- but also other projects as well. SSN has been absorbed into Xpresit Net as "SyncDev Forums" as a part of this restructuring.

We're hoping to encourage a spirit of cooperation within the BBS Scene and beyond. That the projects we will make available here will encourage both developers and users of the applications to effectively utilize community based support and collaboration.

The rest of the side links on the left navigation will largely NOT be SyncDev Related at all -- but rather, a "best of" list. Not "best of the web" seeing as the WWW is simply one of many protocols on THE INTERNET, which does not consist of and has never consisted solely of "The World Wide Web". So we'll also be listing all of the Non-SyncDev projects / sites out there that we personally feel to be "noteworthy". So you can be assured that it's all going to be some good quality stuff seeing as we are incredibly PICKY -- especially when it comes to "main stream" services. Back to Top | Site Map

Adding Your Project

Adding your project does not mean your giving it to us, it doesn't mean we retain ownership of it nor does it mean we have any control over it what so ever. Whats yours is yours and it shall remain as such.

What is does mean is that you've simply become a part of the SyncDev Community. Think of it like joining your BBS to an Echomail Network or signing up to an ISP for Broadband. It doesn't mean the Echomail Networks owns your BBS and it doesn't mean your ISP now owns all of your computers and network hardware. It simply means that now you're capable of efficiently reaching more people.

In joining SyncDev it means you've got access to an increased amount of knowledgeable people that might be willing to assist you if you need assistance. People who might create plugins and addons for your application. Things like that. Your also encouraged to assist with other peoples projects as well. Schedule permitting, of course.

Each project has it's own website so yes, you will be required to have one. Even if it's just a SourceForge page, thats not a problem. We also know that some projects are larger than others. That smaller projects might benefit larger projects by way of integration (ie: a Server Service being integrated into an Operating System).

What We Are NOT

We are not trying to re-invent the wheel. We're not a SourceForge Clone or a Softpedia Clone. We're not trying to do what everyone else has already done before. In fact, it's highly likely that your project would be declined rather than accepted. We're looking for some of the most innovative projects to be made available here. Not yet another CMS or yet another Forum Software or yet another Port Scanner or yet another Media Player.

On the equal and opposite side of the fence, to use the previous comparison: Perhaps a CMS that does new things with existing technology and quite a few things that no other CMS is capable of, or a Forum Software structured in some never-before-seen way with some obscenely awesome features you can't find anywhere else or a Media Player that does things no other Media Player can (or eliminates all of the pet peeves of every other Media Player). Softwares that get things talking to each other that normally don't communicate is another good example. Things that when people see them, they think to themselves "Holy Fucking Christ! There's actually an application that does this sort of thing?! Whoa!"

We're looking for creativity and innovation. Outside the box thinkers. Back to Top | Site Map

Synchweb Themes

Synchweb Themes are a SyncDev Project coordinated through the Xpresit - Syncdev SBBS Modding and Xpresit - Syncdev SSJS / HTML / Coding Message Areas.

Cerberus Themes Set focused more on function. Skyline Themes (by the Sysop of Skyline BBS) focus more on design. Once the two come together -- they will be the most awesome thing for Synchronet, yet!

PROJECT: Cerberus Themes Set

Cerberus Themes Set is a highly experimental Synchweb Modification. So far it's coming along pretty good. The goal of this modification is for ease of customization and to provide you with newer and more powerful features that one would expect to see on a Web-Based BBS Interface -- as well as quite a few that you won't find anywhere else.

Anyone who can (and wants to) is welcome to help with the development. Be it assisting in implementing new features or just Alpha Testing this newborn monster.

PROJECT: Linuxforwindows (dot net)

Linuxforwindows.net is a comprehensive, sarcastic, funny & plain English dummy book of sorts, for people who are used to Microsoft Windows but are pondering making the leap to Linux. For those of you who are not total geeks and would prefer things to be explained in a straight forward and simple format, that is what this project is for.

It's also great for us Linux People who don't want to spend hours answering a billion questions asked by those who are not familiar with Linux -- just give them the url for this project.

If you wandered into this section by way of a Google Search or something looking for a way to "run Linux under Windows" then the bad news is, thats not what this project is for and you've reached this website in error. However -- we'll still end your search anyways by giving you a short list of websites that provide exactly that.
Topologilinux is a free Linux Distribution to be run on top or inside your existing windows system. The main thing with Topologilinux is that it does not require any partitioning at all. (uses a single file as linux root system) Topologilinux is therefore very easy to install.

Goodbye-Microsoft is a Debian Linux installer which can allow Debian Linux to co-exist with Windows, or it can completely kill the Windows install (so be very careful as to which one of those you tell it to do versus which one of those you want it to do). It is a pretty simple and straight forward installer. If at any time you decide you wish it to co-exist with Windows, but you end up disliking the Debian Flavor of Linux -- you can always just uninstall it as you would any other thing you might install to your PC.

Wubi is an unofficial Ubuntu installer for Windows users that will bring you into the Linux world with a single click. Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu as any other application. If you heard about Linux and Ubuntu, if you wanted to try them but you were afraid, this is for you. It does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader. Just run the installer, no need to burn a CD. Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and If you do not like, you can simply uninstall it. Wubi (like Ubuntu) is free. The important thing is that it costs absolutely nothing, it is their gift to you.

To jump back on to the topic at hand -- Linuxforwindows.net is indefinitely under construction like most sites on the Internet. Taking lots of time to implement and always changing to keep things as up to date as humanly possible. So, we hope the sarcastic humor of the site brings you some good laughs and we hope that the plain English nature of the site provides you with some easy learning as you enter into the wonderful and amazing world of Linux Operating Systems.

PROJECT: SyncLinux OS

From the BBS Scene Community sparks the idea of a BBSing Operating System. You don't have to understand exactly what the "BBS Scene" is or the vast history that dates back as far as the late 1970's. All of this can be discovered later.

What is very important however, is that you've paid for your computer, so shouldn't you be getting the most out of it as humanly possible? Based on Ubuntu Linux and using Synchronet for most of its "core services", SyncLinux is an attempt to bridge the great divide between client and server.

You've probably heard the terms "client" and "server" before. You use them every day. Things like Instant Messengers and Web Browsers are "clients". Servers are the sites on the Internet that you connect to. The main stream would have you believe that a "server" is some expensive, complicated, uber-elite piece of machinery only reserved for large corporations.

A server is simply a piece of software, just like any other. You probably don't realize that your computer performs server functions every day! A server is just a piece of software that "serves" content. When you send your friend a file by way of a direct connection via Instant Messenger, your computer is performing a server function. When someone connects to your Desktop using things like PCanywhere or VNC, thats a server function, too. When you enable file sharing on your ICQ Client, your PC is providing a server function. When you use a Peer-2-Peer (P2P) Network, your computer is yet again "serving" content to someone else.

To the dismay of the corporations, every day more and more people are discovering the freedom that home servers give you. The big boys don't want you to know that your PC is capable of absolutely everything they like to provide you on their ad-spammed pseudo-free hosts or expensive pay services. Their stomachs really start to become queasy when people find out that you don't need to have some phat corporate Internet pipe to securely and publicly share content with the world directly from your home PC. Seeing as it's unlike that you're going to be the next Google (and if you did become the next Google, you'd also become filthy rich so theres really nothing to complain about either way), your Home Broadband Connection is all you need to provide for yourself all the services that you want and to be able to share whatever content you want to with the world -- even if you only have a Dynamic IP Address!

PROJECT: D'Bridge

D'Bridge is a Front end Mailer Daemon and Mail Processor with the primary goal of going above and beyond what this sort of technology is normally capable of.

SOME OF IT'S FEATURES INCLUDE:

- PNP-FTN (Plug'N'Play Fidonet Technology Networking) that will allow you to apply to an Echomail Network, instantly be assigned a Dynamic FTN Address (a bit DHCP-ish in nature) and then auto-updated with a Static FTN Address pending approval by the NC (Network Coordinator), which will allow an "instant mail feed" with ZERO wait time.

- Auto-Configuration of Networked Message Areas (supported BBS Softwares Only)

- QWK Networking (Synchronet / Wildcat Winserver Style) as well as FTN2QWK (and vice versa) gating

- FTN Zone Gating (without 10 thousand ZoneGate Lines following the origin line)

- Internet Email & QWK / FTN Netmail (as well as Public Networked Forums) accessible via SMS on your CELL PHONE without the need for the Cellular Service to include Internet Access as a part of the package.

- Backwards & Forwards compatibility between FTN and QWK Private Netmail Routing (ie: an FTN Address can send Private Mail to a QWK Address) as well as standard Internet Email compatibility within this routing system.

- NNTP Support for offering QWK and FTN forums in Usenet Format (as well as offering Usenet in FTN and QWK Format)

- Import RSS Feeds as Forum Posts (using wget to pull the articles)

- & a whole lot more!

This is one of those "get things that don't normally talk to each other to communicate" sort of applications, perfect for both private and business use. Though D'Bridge is closed source -- it is free -- and the author is more than happy to provide his assiatance if you wish to integrate his software into one of your applications or platforms!

Feature requests are always a welcomed thing -- and if theres some formats or protocols that doesn't normally talk to each other that you'd like to get communicating -- just let him know and he'll see what he can do!

THIS SITE HAS BEEN HACKED!

JUST KIDDING! But we scared you for a split second, didn't we? :-)

The BBS XChange

the BBS Xchange

BBS Xchange has several advantages over other banner programs. First, there are no ratios. Banners are randomly picked to be shown. Therefore, even with a low-hit site, your banner is still shown.

Second, BBS Xchange is only for BBS related pages. (Don't know what a BBS is? Go here.) Nothing else is accepted. Your banner is shown only on other BBS related pages. Your banner has a much greater chance of being clicked on.

Third, because of the focus of BBS Xchange, we have very high click through ratios (CTR). CTR is the ratio between the number of times your banner is shown to the number of times a person clicks on your banner. Currently, the average CTR on BBS Xchange is 12.1:1 ! For every 12 banners shown, someone has clicked on one! An average CTR for a BBS related page on one of those other banner exchanges is about 93:1. Your banner would have to be shown almost 100 times before being clicked on.
